Exploring EWG at Natural Products Expo West 2024
At the Natural Products Expo West 2024, one of the standout highlights for me was the Environmental Working Group (EWG).
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is an American non-profit organization focused on environmental and public health issues. They conduct research and advocacy to promote healthier living and protect the environment.
One of EWG‘s well-known initiatives is the annual release of the “Dirty Dozen” and “Clean Fifteen” lists. These lists highlight fruits and vegetables with the highest and lowest pesticide residues, respectively, based on their analysis of USDA and FDA data. The “Dirty Dozen” includes produce that may be worth buying organic due to pesticide contamination, while the “Clean Fifteen” lists produce with the least pesticide residues, making them safer options when buying conventionally grown. These lists help consumers make informed choices about their food purchases to minimize exposure to pesticides.
As someone with eczema, I always pay attention to SkinDeep.
EWG‘s Skin Deep® is an online cosmetic and personal care product database and guide developed by the Environmental Working Group. Skin Deep® provides information on the safety and potential health impacts of various cosmetics, skincare products, and ingredients commonly found in these products.
The database rates products and ingredients based on their potential hazards and health concerns, considering factors such as toxicity, presence of allergens, and known or suspected links to health issues like cancer or reproductive harm. Users can search for specific products or ingredients on the Skin Deep website to see their ratings and get detailed information about the potential risks associated with their use.
Skin Deep® aims to empower consumers to make more informed choices about the products they use on their skin and bodies by providing transparent and accessible information about the safety of cosmetic and personal care items. This resource is valuable for individuals seeking safer alternatives or those concerned about the potential health impacts of certain chemicals commonly found in personal care products.
During this event, I had the opportunity to speak directly with representatives from EWG. They explained that becoming EWG Verified is as simple as not using specified ingredients, although it seems challenging for mass-produced products to achieve this certification.
In this context, it’s wonderful to see companies like Honest Company and Eczema Honey producing EWG Verified products.
EWG Verified is a mark given to products that meet the organization’s strict standards for transparency and safety. To earn the EWG Verified mark, products must:
- Disclose all ingredients, including those in fragrance mixtures.
- Meet stringent ingredient health and safety criteria based on EWG’s research.
- Follow good manufacturing practices.
EWG Verified products can be viewed on EWG’s website (https://www.ewg.org/skindeep/), although the site’s search functionality could be improved. For product searches, I recommend using Amazon.
